Marie Stopes Bangladesh (MSB) exists to bring quality family planning and reproductive healthcare to improve sexual reproductive health of women, men and adolescents in Bangladesh.
We’ve been delivering family planning, safe MR and maternal health services for over 25 years. MSB provides services to around 2 million clients a year and is a major partner of the Government of Bangladesh in the National Family Planning Programme.
History of Marie Stopes Bangladesh
MSB was established in 1988 in Chittagong by Marie Stopes International (MSI) following a survey which highlighted the need for a high quality family planning service in the region. The journey started with a modest clinic financed by the UK’s then Overseas Development Administration (now known as DFID, UKAid) Joint Funding Scheme. This clinic soon became very successful due to its client focus, high quality services and innovative marketing. Within three years, approximately 500 clients were being seen each month, and the clinic was well on the way to financial sustainability.
Following this success, we set up three more clinics in 1990-92 with European Commission co-financing, and in 1994 established an employment based family planning project with further funding from the ODA’s JFS. By 1995, MSB had firmly established itself as a high quality service provider and as a result was awarded a large bilateral grant by the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID). This allowed us to establish a head office in Dhaka, invest substantially in developing and expanding our team and significantly expand our service delivery network. Simultaneously, we also extended the range of reproductive health services provided in our clinics, including the management of sexually transmitted infections – an area in which our expertise is ranked very highly in Bangladesh. Apart from the direct service delivery MSB also initiated capacity building and awareness building among vulnerable and marginalized groups of society. Like the DFID project provided us with the opportunity to work with vulnerable and marginalized groups, and to work in partnership with other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to help address the needs of these groups.
In February 2005, Marie Stopes became the first health service providing NGO in Bangladesh to be certified as ISO 9001:2000 compliment. Currently the Marie Stopes Head Office and many of our clinics are under the ISO 9001: 2008 certification.
Our work is underpinned by our passionate commitment to save and improve women’s lives. For families living in extreme poverty, these are life and death issues. They trust us because we put their interests first. Our services include: family planning, safe MR, post-MR care, maternal and child health care, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS prevention.
We have 126 clinics around the country where clients can access these services, but the majority of our work is specially targeting the poor, slum dwellers, factory workers, sex workers, floating population, injecting drug users, transgender, men having sex with men and young population.
MSB strongly believes in organization sustainability and is working relentlessly to establish a sound institutional base. Presently, MSB works with around 2,000 full time team members and 3,600 volunteers. At the heart of the way we work are our partnerships – with existing healthcare providers, with governments, and with other aid agencies. Our aim is to create sustainable local networks to bring people the reproductive healthcare choices they need.
Ultimately, we measure our success by the women and men we help, and the sustainable impact we make on the lives of the people we serve.
