The ‘minilap’ method
of sterilization, also known as ‘tubectomy’ or
‘ligation’ has long been practiced in Bangladesh.
Aside from ‘minilap,’ a more advanced method also
exists known as laparoscopic ligation. This method
involves viewing the inside of the abdominal cavity
through a laparoscope (small instrument) with the
ligation being done with the help of a special clip.
In most cases, the patient can go home within a few
hours of the procedure and often no stitching is
required. MSB is currently the only laproligation
service provider in Bangladesh. The specialized
service started in Marie Stopes’ Chittagong-I clinic
in 1995. Despite being in a somewhat conservative
area, Laproligation has proved to be immensely
popular and was thus introduced into the Dhaka-II
clinic followed by Feni, Narsingdi, Sylhet and
Rangpur. On an average 1,000 Laproligations are
conducted in Marie Stopes clinics per month
